Xavi is back to his best – Luis Enrique

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique believes Xavi showed he is back to his peak after scoring against Nice in Saturday's 1-1 draw.

The Spain midfielder was the subject of some criticism last term as Barca finished the season without a major trophy before Vicente del Bosque's side crashed out of the World Cup in the group stages.

But the 34-year-old came off the bench at the Allianz Riviera to score from the spot in the Catalans' 1-1 draw with their Ligue 1 opponents and Luis Enrique was delighted by the veteran's current condition.

"Right now he's back to his best both in terms of fitness and motivation," the coach told the media after the game.

Barcelona's squad has been trimmed over the summer, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas sold, and Luis Enrique indicated he does not want to have to cut down his roster any further.

"I hope that all the players with me now are still here at the end of the season," explained the former Real Madrid player.

Reflecting on Saturday's performance, the coach admitted that there are improvements that he would like to see, but that the outcome of the game was of little concern to him.

"The result is what matters least," the 44-year-old said. "These games are for seeing where each player is and telling each of them what things they'll need to improve.

"We'e going the logical, and correct, way about things. We can't expect too much before the season has even started."

Barcelona's next outing is a friendly against Napoli in Geneva on Wednesday before meeting HJK Helsinki next Saturday.
