UEFA president Michel Platini said Thursday
that Europe deserves another place at the World Cup.
"European football proved it is the leader in the world," Platini
said ahead of the draw for the Champions League group stage.
At the 1998 World Cup in France, 15 teams from 32 were European but
at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the continent sent only 13
representatives.
"I have the intention to ask for one more (place) because we are
world champions," Platini said, referring to Germany's extra-time
victory over Argentina in Rio de Janeiro. "Other confederations ask,
I will do it like them."
Russia qualify automatically as hosts for the 2018 World Cup and
Platini hopes to raise the number of European qualifying spots from
13 to 14.
